Innovation in a Web 2.0 world, a podcast with Professor Eric von Hippel

During a recent course I took at the MIT Sloan School of Management, I had a chance to meet Professor Eric von Hippel. Professor von Hippel, who leads the school's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group, had some interesting things to say about how the Web, particularly Web 2.0, will change the face of innovation.

The notion that I really liked the most was that users have always been the real developers of many of the new products that manufacturers produce. This is evident in the field of sports, for example the first skateboard. But now users are increasingly engaging in collaborative innovation - enabled by the Web. This collaborative user innovation has higher efficiency than traditional in-house product development by producers. As a result, some firms are abandoning aspects of their in-house development activities in favor of becoming publishers of innovations developed by user communities! Check out our podcast …

B2B Marketing with Web 2.0 tools, a podcast with Tom Pick

I met Tom Pick through my blog when he identified me as an emerging blogger with good content on B2B marketing and decided to link to me. When Robert Lesser and I put out our survey to identify which Web 2.0 tools are most popular with B2B marketers, Tom was one of our first responders.

I asked Tom about his experiences with Web 2.0 and what his clients are asking him for. I wanted to get a sense of how on-target our survey results were compared to his experiences, as well as elicit some best practices in using Web 2.0 tools to share with you. Enjoy …

Social Media Success Story podcast with Maggie Fox - Yamaha Motor

I met Maggie Fox through Social Media Today, a collective we belong to. She offered to do a Social Media Success Story podcast with me, so I hope this is one of many such stories to come!

Maggie is working on a phased social media strategy for Yamaha Motor. She just completed a detailed analysis of Phase I, including what her company, Social Media Group, calls "engagement metrics." (The engagement metrics for Yamaha Motor are double those of the “most popular” community in the same space). In this podcast, Maggie discusses this work and provides a really cool anecdote about how Yamaha Motor successfully connected with an influencer who's active in a competitor's community. Enjoy …

A letter from my son

Dear Dad,

Thank you for being my mentor. You teach me almost everything I need to know and have all the qualities of a mentor. You are smart, nice, patient, and helpful.

I needed help when I first started sailing, and you showed me how to do it. You showed me the lines, parts of the boat, where to sit, and how to go fast. And look, now I have trophies in my room.

Hopefully I can be a smart, nice, patient, and helpful mentor like you.

Signed,
Philip Dunay

Well, yesterday put the icing on that cake. This weekend my 12-year-old son sailed his boat against a field of 50+ racers at Belle Haven Yacht Club. When I arrived at the dock to pick him up after the race, he yelled over from the water: “Dad I took FIRST PLACE OVERALL!” Which means not only did he sail well, he sailed consistently in the top of the fleet and well enough to win the regatta completely!

Those of you who know me well know that sailing has been a big part of my life. And certainly no words can describe the feeling of my son decisively winning a first place trophy.

Sometimes in life you need to stop and enjoy the moment. This happens to be one of those, and I beg your indulgence as I congratulate my son, Philip Dunay.

Who said advertising can’t break through the clutter?

I took my two boys (ages 8 and 12) to a Triple-A baseball game recently, and I was impressed by the amount of fan interactivity and the superb integration efforts of some advertisers.

Example 1: The announcer called out a car license plate (as routinely happens), leading some fan to think he or she had left the lights on. But in a surprise twist, the announcer said: “Congratulations. Your car was voted the dirtiest in the parking lot, so Splash Car Wash is giving you a free car wash.”

Now that broke through the clutter in my mind and got my attention. But that’s not all.

Example 2: The announcer called out a seat number. Instead of offering the fan a free jug of windshield washer fluid, he said “Congratulations your seat is being upgraded by OptiCare, which also is giving you a free eye exam. Meantime you can see the game better from up close.” Again, breaking through the clutter with a well-integrated advertisement.

But that's still not all.

Example 3: The announcer called a lady onto the top of the third base dugout and presented her with a nice bouquet of flowers. The announcer said “Congratulations. You have been selected as the Queen of tonight’s baseball game, and these flowers are from City Line Florist.” Another surprise ending and another memorable advertisement.

Where’s the buzz? 3 for 3. I remembered every one of the advertisers' names, even after a beer at the game. That hands down beats any Super Bowl ad I have ever seen. Simply put, these regional advertisers deserve a lot of credit for knowing their audience and finding a good offer – an offer that probably doesn’t cost them very much, but buys them huge awareness in their target audience. Nicely done!

B2B Marketers vote on the Best Web 2.0 tools!!

Can you name the most popular B2B blogging tool? Do you know what's best for RSS? How about naming the top podcasting tool?

Robert Lesser, president of Direct Impact Marketing, and I are pleased to announce we have some answers. We've produced a survey of Web 2.0 tools that is going to help tons of marketers get their Web 2.0 efforts under way.

The just-released survey of B2B marketers found they are increasingly using Web 2.0 technologies in campaigns, with 31% having initiated pilot campaigns, 28% using them on an ad hoc basis, and another 42% rolling them out to their teams, divisions or entire organizations.

B2B marketers are not just embracing Web 2.0 tools, they're pushing the envelope on adoption. They're using the new tools to reach prospects, not just reinforce existing customer relationships. And they're quickly moving up the learning curve.

The link to participate in the survey and download the report

From this research, we have created an online version of the Web 2.0 Tools Directory that will be continually updated with Survey results.
